Discernment to the Permanent Diaconate A Treasure Restored Financial Considerations Ministries of Charity, Word and Sacrament Permanent Diaconate Video Study Why a Permanent Diaconate Who can Become a Permanent Diaconate Diocesan Home Page A Treasure Restored The permanent diaconate is one of the lesser known treasures of our Church. Although such deacons are uncommon in 20th century Western Canada, the permanent diaconate has a long and venerable history, in our Church. The service of deacons is well documented from the very earliest days of the Church. In the Book of Acts, the apostles ordain seven deacons to help them in their ministry (6:16). Writing to Timothy, St. Paul refers to the qualities of a deacon (I Tim 3:8-13). The Diaconate flourished in the western Church until the fifth century, when, for various reasons, it experienced a slow decline, ultimately surviving merely as an intermediate stage for candidates preparing for priestly ordination. The Council of Trent wished to restore the Permanent Diaconate to what it was in ancient times. This desire was reiterated at Vatican II “it will be possible for the future to restore the diaconate as a proper and permanent rank of the hierarchy....(and confer it) even upon married men, provided they be of more mature age, and also on suitable young men for whom, however, the law of celibacy must remain in force”. Excerpt from the Vatican website: Basic norms for the formation of permanent deacons #2

This means that the sacrament of confirmation is to be received at the same celebration as the child's first Eucharist. At the same time, families come to our Diocese and join our parishes from other dioceses who have not restored the order of the sacraments; therefore, options for preparing children for confirmation who have already received their first Eucharist are provided. Please remember that this is to be the exception not the norm in our Diocese. Access the sheet with the suggested material for sacramental preparation by clicking on the link to the left. clicking the link to the left.. Also when older children are brought forward to become fully initiated into the faith community, the norm is that they go through an age-appropriate RCIA journey. The recommended age to place an uninitiated child into an RCIA program is between 10-12 years old depending on the child's maturity and the family's own faith journey. If you have questions about this, please call me. It is recommended that the preparation for children to complete their initiation occurs over a three-year period with the year prior to actual preparation focused on the first year of the Finding God resource. Year 1 covers first year of the Finding God resource with their peers Year 2 covers the second year of the Finding God resource and prepares for and celebrates their first Reconciliation Year 3 covers the third year of the Finding God resource and prepares for and celebrates their Confirmation and first Eucharist. Year 4 and following: Families are encouraged to continue the faith formation of their children using the Finding God resources. At this time, this schedule does not apply to children who are in Catholic schools as they are receiving ongoing, age-appropriate catechesis throughout their school years. Children attending Catholic schools will receive all three sacraments during their Grade 2 year. Preparation for reception of the sacraments is to happen in the parish. It is the Diocesan guideline that parents attend sacramental preparation classes with their children whether the child is attending a Catholic school or not. If you have any questions please contact me via phone at 306-922-4747 extension 227 or via email by clicking on the link to the left. Also, I offer a 75-minute parish presentation on the role of parents in the faith development of their child. This presentation emphasizes that the sacraments of initiation are just that, initiation into the faith community and that life-long catechesis is the Catholic faith journey once one is initiated into the community of believers. Please click on the link to the left to send me an email if you would like to hear more about this presentation, or if you would like to have me come out to your parish. Finally, in parish communities where there is no access for families to send their children to Catholic schools, the parish is responsible for creating opportunities for the faith development of the children. See more about Children's Catechetical Programs below.

  • Parish Next Steps | RC Diocese of Prince Albert

“Synodality is the way of being the Church today according to the will of God in a dynamic of discerning and listening together to the voice of the Holy Spirit.” Pope Francis Resources to Support the Parish 2022 Synod Implementation Our Diocese of Prince Albert Synod Synthesis offers six potential next steps gleaned after the reading of the parish syntheses. Parishes have been asked to reflect upon and discern which two steps their community is being called by the Holy Spirit to begin to bring to life in their community. The Diocesan Resource Center and Office of Evangelization and Catechesis would like to offer support to parishes in discerning and implementing their next steps Click here to view a list of Synod Resources Here are two short videos to watch with those who are gathered to understand what is being asked of each of us as we listen to each other and journey as a synodal Church. (First of ten videos from the Diocese of Galloway in Ireland) Video on listening to each other A few video suggestions from the ten produced by the Diocese of Galloway and others focused on the focus of each step are provided below. These may help in imagining/discerning how to incarnate the step your parish chooses. Each short video from the Diocese of Galloway includes questions for reflection to aid in creating clarity of thought around the topic being discussed. These short videos and questions could help a parish discern their path forward. It may be fruitful for those who will be part of the discernment to have access to the videos You will note that some of the same video suggestions are offered for multiple steps. The base of all the steps is listening; therefore, the art of listening, the ability to speak out, and the ability to engage in dialogue are key for multiple steps. The short videos from the Diocese of Galloway are all under 5 minutes in length. The other video suggestions are longer; the length of time of the video is provided in brackets after the title. Scripture suggestions with reflections and questions from the Biblical Resources for Synodality, which will support the laying of a foundation of prayer for which every step the parish chooses. The full document with guides for praying with Scripture is available on the Vatican Synod webpage here https://www.synod.va/en/news/biblical-resources-for-synodality.html (Re)Building Parish Community Listening to the Holy Spirit Walking with Others Responding to the Call to Service Growing in Faith is for All (Children, Youth, and Adults) Forming Parish Leadership for Mission
